Baitlog (the “app”, made by Shiori) is built privacy-first. The point of the app is that
your catches, your photos and your locations are processed and stored on your iPhone —
they are not sent to us or to any server of ours.
1. What the app uses
- Photos: when you pick a catch photo, the app reads its metadata (EXIF date and location) on the device to fill in your log. Photos are never uploaded, copied off the device, or sent anywhere.
- Location: used to calculate solunar times, sunrise and sunset, and to look up the weather. Everything except the weather lookup is calculated on the device. Granting location is optional; without it the app shows a forecast for a placeholder location.
- Notifications: used to tell you the evening before about the best day of the week. These are local notifications scheduled on your iPhone — nothing is sent externally.
2. The one thing that leaves your device (weather)
To show weather and temperature, the app may send your position rounded to about 1 km (latitude and longitude numbers only) to the weather data service Open-Meteo. It is used only to look up the weather, and that processing follows Open-Meteo’s own privacy policy.
Nothing else — no location history, no photos, no catch records — is sent anywhere.
3. What the app does not do
- Send your location, photos or records to us or to any server of ours
- Require an account or a login
- Show ads, or use your data for advertising
- Run analytics or behavioural tracking
- Sell or share personal information with third parties
4. Keeping and deleting your data
Your data lives on your iPhone only.
When you change phones, use Back up (photos included) in the Settings tab to write everything into a single file, then Restore from a backup on the new device. Restoring from an iPhone backup (iCloud or a computer) also carries the data over.
Export CSV in the Settings tab gives you a spreadsheet-friendly list of your records. It does not include photos and cannot be imported back into the app.
Deleting the app removes the data stored on the device.
5. Permissions
- Photos (read access to the photos you pick): to bring catch photos into the journal, processed on the device
- Location (while using the app, optional): for solunar times, sunrise/sunset and the weather lookup
- Notifications (optional): to tell you about the best window in advance
6. Purchases
Removing the record limit is a one-time in-app purchase through the App Store — not a subscription. Apple handles the payment; we never receive your card or payment details.
With the same Apple ID you never have to buy it twice: use Restore purchase in the Settings tab.
7. Children’s privacy
The app is not designed for children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.
8. Changes to this policy
This policy may be revised as features change or as the law requires. Significant changes will be announced on this page.
9. Frequently asked questions
- Q. Are the times a tide table?
A. No. Baitlog shows solunar periods — major periods when the Moon is overhead or underfoot, minor periods around moonrise and moonset — calculated from the Moon’s position at your longitude. It does not model the tidal lag of individual harbours, so for water levels check a local tide chart.
- Q. Where is my data stored?
A. On your iPhone only. There is no server.
- Q. What happens when I change phones?
A. Use Back up (photos included) in Settings to put records and photos into one file, then Restore from a backup on the new device. Restoring adds to what is there, so existing records are never erased.
- Q. Do I have to buy it again on a new phone?
A. No. With the same Apple ID, tap Restore purchase in the Settings tab.
- Q. Does it work with no signal?
A. Yes. Solunar times, sunrise/sunset and moon phase are all calculated on the device. Only the weather lookup needs a connection.
- Q. Which units does it use?
A. Sizes show in inches or centimetres and temperatures in °F or °C, following your region’s setting.
